Talking Mats for AAC

Readiness for AAC

We believe that people should be involved in decisions about their communication and AAC.  We recognise that early conversations about AAC can be challenging so this resource aims to support these conversations and to provide people with the time and space to think about whether they are ‘ready’ for AAC.

This Readiness for AAC Script is provided for free to allow Teachers, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists etc. to facilitate a discussion about ‘Readiness for AAC’ with their clients.  The right time for this discussion will vary from person to person but examples include: when AAC is first being considered, when provision of AAC via local funding is being considered, when referral to a regional hub for Specialised AAC service is being considered.

Thresource was funded by Ace Centre and created collaboratively with Talking Mats  (www.talkingmats.com) A script, the symbols and a demo video are provided – you just need to bring the doormat! (or improvise with a piece of card or old carpet!
