Research Project: An exploration of parental experiences of supporting child users of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in developing friendships

14/04/2026

Hello, my name is Katie and I am a student at Manchester Metropolitan University in my final year studying for an MSc in Speech and Language Therapy. I have worked with children and young people who use AAC for several years, and am very interested in the social role, such as developing and maintaining friendships, of using AAC.

There is quite a lot of research highlighting the way in which children, young people and adults who use AAC describe their friendships. More recently, the role of parents in supporting their child’s use of AAC has also been explored. I hope to explore further the experiences of parents in supporting their children to use AAC in their daily life, through exploring what they view their role is within supporting their child to develop friendships.

I hope this research will help Speech and Language Therapists to understand how they can support parents and families when delivering care for their children.
