Urdu Vocabulary Assistant required

Salary: Salary Scale SO1, Scale Point 23. Hourly rate: £17.63

Contract: Fixed Term Temporary Contract

Working Pattern: Part Time

Location: Remote

Ace Centre is looking to contract a bilingual Urdu/English speaker to support the creation of an Urdu AAC vocabulary package. This opportunity would suit a Speech & Language Therapy / Health / Social care / Education professional or student, or a Therapy / Learning Assistant etc.

The contract would be for 35 hours (total) to complete the project.

The successful candidate would be required to start as soon as possible and complete this project within three months. There is flexibility around when these hours are worked to fit in with your availability.

Ace Centre is a registered national charity (No. 1089313) providing Assistive Technology (AT) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) services to children and adults with complex needs and people who support them.

Essential skills/experience

  • Fluent bilingual speaker of Urdu and English
  • Able to type Urdu using a keyboard (e.g. iOS/iPad keyboard)
  • Able to transliterate Urdu and type it
  • Able to working with/listen to both Urdu-India and Urdu-Pakistan Text-to-Speech voices (these are Microsoft Azure Neural voices and samples can be heard here:https://json2video.com/ai-voices/azure/languages/urdu/
  • Understanding of Urdu grammar structures
  • Able to work from home (access to the AAC software ‘TD Snap’ will be provided and training will be given on how to use this software)
  • IT skills

Desirable skills/experience

  • Familiar with AAC
  • Experience of editing AAC vocabulary packages

The responsibilities include:

  • Quality check an AAC Urdu vocabulary package that has been made in the TD Snap software
  • Edit the AAC Urdu vocabulary package so that all the Urdu words in the vocabulary package are pronounced correctly when the Urdu-India and Urdu-Pakistan Microsoft Text-to-Speech voices are used.
  • Transliteration of some of the Urdu words so that they can be typed into the AAC software
  • Meeting with Ace Centre team (in person or online) to handover information about the vocabulary package and develop an appropriate resource to help us share the vocabulary with families and school staff
  • Updating Ace Centre staff regularly about the progress of the work and working to agreed deadlines
