This Developing level course provides an overview of ways in which we can best support our AAC users in the classroom. We will explore the principles of a total communication environment and promote ways in which we can facilitate use of an AAC system – paper-based or electronic – for functional communication.

Our AAC in the Classroom training is delivered across 2 teacher-supported online webinars.

Course aim:

To highlight useful strategies for teaching staff to support the implementation of AAC systems throughout the school day.

You will:

• Understand what is meant by a “total communication” environment and the different forms of AAC.
• Be able to describe the use of AAC for a range of communication functions.
• Understand the importance of your role as a communication partner in the teaching and implementation of AAC.
• Be able to identify 3 practical techniques to support the implementation of AAC in the classroom.
• Be able to support an individual in their use of a personal AAC system.

This course is suitable for:

Teaching staff and therapists who support pupils to use their AAC systems throughout the day in school.
