Assessments for people not eligible within NHS Contract

If you know or work with someone who is not eligible for assessment within the NHS Contract, ACE Centre may still be able to help you to identify ways in which they might communicate, write, and have access to education and independence - through our Information Day, and Consultation Day appointments services.

Making Assistive Technology work is a team effort.  Very few people manage in isolation.  Individuals, families and professionals all need to work together as a team from the start, from the first step of identifying a need, through to the ongoing support of the long-term goals of the individual.

If significant others are not present this can lead to problems such as a lack of funding, or inappropriate recommendations for equipment, training and support, and/or a failure in implementation.  The end result is that the intervention does not succeed, and the individual is unable to move forward.

For these reasons, ACE Centre would like the 'team' to be identified from the beginning of the process:  Our main objective is to facilitate closer working with the team to identify and achieve common and realistic goals.

Information Day Appointments:  We can offer a free one hour appointment with a member of our team on one of our monthly information days. These appointments can be used for:

  • Clarifying the needs of the individual in relation to potential applications and uses of Assistive Technology
  • Establishing the team who will support the individual using Assistive Technology – professionals, parents and carers can all attend this appointment.
  • Discussing possible resources and strategies in relation to the individual’s needs
  • Considering loans of equipment for the individual to trial

This appointment is not intended to be an assessment of the individual’s needs but is a useful first stage in any effective assessment process. This one hour appointment is designed for discussion of issues rather than for trialling of equipment/ strategies with individuals. The team may bring photographs or video footage to aid this initial meeting. This will be discussed and agreed with you prior to the appointment.

Following this appointment the team can decide to:

a) Implement strategies agreed during this appointment:  Sometimes teams require a specific piece of advice or information that can be gained at their first appointment and so need no further help from the ACE Centre at this time.

b) Attend a further Information Day Appointment:  As a result of the initial appointment, there may be a need for a second session to reflect on trial of equipment/ resources and/or the implementation of advice/ decisions.

c) Arrange a Consultation Day Appointment:  Some issues/ needs are more complex and cannot be resolved or advised upon in sufficient detail in an hour’s appointment. In these cases, ACE Centre can offer a full day Consultation Day Appointment.

Consultation Day Appointments:  A Consultation Day Appointment will incur a charge of £3,000 which includes a full assessment, loan of equipment, a review/training and a written report.  The appointment will be delivered by appropriate members of our Assessment and Training staff. All members of the individual’s team would be encouraged to be present.

We will require a referral form to help us plan for the appointment. For more information on the assessment process read this document. If at all possible we ask for a video to plan for the day. To guide you on what we look for please read our guidance here. For the payment form please see here.

We are constantly evaluating our services and reserve the right to change them as and when appropriate.
